The Matzah Ball: A Novel Customer Reviews
:- 2.0 out of 5 stars from BoomWorm Lala -- Underwhelming : I had high hopes for this book. A non-Christmas holiday book. I thought perhaps the author was attempting diversity in romance with a Jewish protagonist with a chronic illness. Possibly breaking out of the overused and overdone characters. But alas it was not to be. As the only person of color that I remember in the book was the same old tired trope of the sassy gay prop of a best friend with a hint of promiscuity. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Lisa Barr -- Having An Absolute Matzah Ball! : How you do you describe a book that you love so much because it brings you sheer joy? It makes you laugh aloud on a plane ride … because it’s so Jewish that it reminds you of all the best, hilarious parts of your own childhood … mostly, the Bubbe who never stops feeding you – food, love, warmth, more food, and of course - her opinions. THE MATZAH BALL by the uber-talented @jeanmeltzer is a fabulous Hanukkah Rom-Com that asks profound questions and tackles hard issues - abandonment, divorce, rejection, and what it’s like wishing Hanukkah could be more like Christmas, being Jewish in a world that gives you one crappy shelf at the party store versus aisles of gorgeous bright, sparkly Christmas décor. And yet, in its distinct Jewish angst – this beautiful, heartwarming novel delivers such a powerful universal message with its rich cast of characters: No matter your religion, race, sexual orientation -- we are all in it together. The novel is centered around Rachel, a 30 year old - NOT YET MARRIED - daughter of a famous Long Island rabbi, who secretly writes bestselling Christmas love stories under a pseudonym. Talk about a “Shanda” … Rachel is also a woman who holds back and hides, suffering secretly from ME/CFS, a “silent illness” known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome – “The Great Decider” – dictating all aspects of her life. It is a subject I know all too well – someone close to me has been dealing with this debilitating disease for years. No spoilers here … but like Hanukkah itself, THE MATZAH BALL shines bright. There will be light, there will be lotsa latkes and laughter - but most of all there will be love. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 9, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Brings the joy while also bringing chronic illness life to light : As a devoted Christmas movie fan and an avid reader of romance and a person living with chronic illness (M.E., fibro, dysautonomia), this book certainly brought a lot of elements together for a fun read that hopefully helps so many of us to feel a little bit more seen & included. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Fishing For Stuff -- Just What We Needed! : I LOVED this book. I loved the emotion, the romance, the Judaism, the Christmas component, the camp memories, the truth about CFS (yes, Ms Meltzer, worst name ever), the love story, the publishing story.....just all of it. This will be the gift that keeps on giving. Readers, you're in for a real treat. Highly recommend! ( Reviewed in the United States on September 29, 2021 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Amazing representation of ME/CFS : I have lived with ME/CFS for 16 years. This is the first time I have ever read a book with a character I could relate to. Jean does a fantastic job writing about illness. The embarrassment of telling people you have "Chronic Fatigue Syndrome", the awkwardness of explaining your health to people who think you are perfectly healthy. How illness is the "Great Decider". Everything she wrote about me/cfs was so spot on. It was so clear that she was writing from first hand experience. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 11, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Shani -- Delicious Matzah Ball! : I loved this book. Like it’s protagonist, I am also a Jew who loves Christmas, and I also love a happy ending, and this book delivers. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 2, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Christina M Yesenofski -- A Fun Read Highlighting ME/CFS : Cute, silly, hard to put down, but so importantly, a wonderful representation of a character with the chronic illness ME/CFS. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Highlander -- As an ME sufferer, I love this book. : Okay, full disclosure - this is not a genre I read often. Chick lit is not really my cup of tea, these days. But, I really enjoyed this book, and as a sufferer of the same wretched disease as the main character, I love this book. It touches on so many sore points - invisibility, invalidity, exhaustion, and it does so with such humour. I really enjoyed the story, too. Well done, Jean Meltzer.
