:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from N. Birondo -- Courageous! : I wish I had the guts to live by this wise man's ideas! It shames me that i've never spent even one hour in jail for my beliefs... ( Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2020 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Charles E. Coulter -- The rights of the governed : Henry David Thoreau, in Civil Disobedience, carefully leads us to his main premise: that government, any and all governments, to be strictly just, must have the sanction and consent of the governed. In other words, our legislative bodies--at whatever level--only have the power that we as citizens concede to them. Thoreau believes strongly in the rights and power of the individual. He respects those civil institutions that are crucial to the function of a just society but challenges his readers to oppose wars of choice and to oppose those institutions that are based on the oppression of others. I wish I had this 25 years ago. ( Reviewed in the United States on July 20, 2017 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Anderson -- True Resistance. Highly Recommend. : Such a wonderful book for Libertarians and Conservatives. Democrat Socialists could learn a lot from this book as well. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2020 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from H.habilis -- Still relevant : I picked this book because I was looking to refresh my understanding of some points in American history. Given the current social and political turmoil, this work was disturbingly accurate. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2017 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Shaun J. -- Easy read - impactful : I was unfamiliar with these works and specifically bought it for the Civil Disobedience title. Thoreau has a way of crafting succinct, impactful sentences. It's a simple read, but you'll want to stop and mull each line. There's no extra fluff here like modern writers. - 1.0 out of 5 stars from camplight -- The Kindle download is CORRUPTED. : The text is not correct. Weird language, missing passages, unreadable. This version is a disgrace. I want my money back. Free copies are available in pdf format on the internet. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Thoreau cold be writing for today’s conditions : Read this book and realize government corruption that we are witnessing today is not new to this country. Thoreau, in 1849 through 1864, is commenting on conditions that are eerily similar to today’s evil in government! ( Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2021 )
- 2.0 out of 5 stars from Tony -- Not his best work. : Maybe I’m not qualified to have an opinion about a master, but since I’ve started, never has one said so much to say so little. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 1, 2020 )
- 1.0 out of 5 stars from Marie -- Unreadable. Get a different version : I hadn't read Thoreau before but one sentence into this book I was perplexed by how illegible it was. I quickly looked up other versions of the same book and purchased a complete copy of the writings of Thoreau for 85c and opened this essay to discover the original is beautifully lucid and the language is immaculate. How can any publisher get away with publishing this confusion??? I can only surmise that the content of the original is so powerful in exploding the current world government which is increasingly totalitarian that some effort has been made to cloud the language and meaning. Shame on you. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 6, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Andy Lima -- The book of the next Decadd : We are seeing the end of freedom and liberty unfolding before our eyes, unprecedented times where true democratic values are surpassed by despotism and authoritarianism disguised as 'greater good'. Thoreau wake us up to the fact that good me must rise to the occasion and act, we have to stand up for what is called common sense of the majority yet unfounded truth serving only the interests of a minority at the top. - 1.0 out of 5 stars from Bob -- Scrambled version : The words are scrambled. Compare other versions and you'll find out this is true. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 6, 2021 )
