- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Timothy Veenstra -- Awesome.. the Stickeen Story Begins Here : Samuel Hall Young here is writing about his adventures with John Muir and Hall's Dog Stickeen, ( Reviewed in the United States on October 24, 2011 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from LTC LDD -- This is REAL Alaska! : Samual Hall Young's account of his days with naturalist John Muir as they explore the Alaskan wilderness actually became difficult to put down. His attention to details puts the reader right there on the face of the glacier with him, scrambling for a safe haven among the multiple dangers facing the men. I read this book while on a cruise up the Alaskan Inside Passage, retracing many of the steps taken by Young and Muir as they map the Last Frontier. The historical footnotes added by Young helped to maintain perspective about the ruggedness of wild Alaska, compared to the modern view of bustling communities. But traveling up the fiords to view the glaciers puts you right back in the canoe with he and Muir, astounded by the beauty of the landscape while recognizing the ancientness of those same surroundings. Great book! ( Reviewed in the United States on May 22, 2013 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from MamaSylvia -- Dated but fascinating : Fascinating account of Alaska exploration by a missionary to the Tlingit Indians and famous naturalist John Muir. The style is very dated, of course, but if you can wade through, I found the portrait of the people and events in pre-gold-rush Alaska a wonderful snapshot. - 4.0 out of 5 stars from James C. Casterline -- Good view of early Alaska and John Muir : A Presbyterian minister does Alaska. I have read John Muir's writing on Alaska. This memoir tells the story of one of the companions in the travel. I enjoyed learning something of the country in the earliest days of American possession and colonization. What interested me more was the view of a famous writer and conservationist who traveled with him. I think the view of the man made reading the book worth my time. John Muir was very hardy, quite brave and inclined to take risks a normal man would avoid or at leat consider more carefully. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2014 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Tiger -- Muir & Young & Stickeen probe the Alaskan Wilderness : While not written by John Muir, Samual Hall Young captures the essence of traveling with the naturalist and becoming one of Muir's closest friends. Muir contributes a third of the book and the other two thirds are reminiscent of John Muir. The descriptions of the grandeur & vastness of Alaska & it's glacier and peoples are stunning. A good read! - 4.0 out of 5 stars from J. Zartman -- Fascinating look at Alaska : I enjoyed this look at Alaska through the eyes of a missionary to the Stickeen people. He includes breathtaking descriptions of Alaska's wild beauty and the people he ministered to. I wish I could have known the godly chief who feared nothing and died trying to bring peace between his people. Samuel Young owned the little dog that John Muir wrote about in his book, "Stickeen." I highly recommend reading this book in conjunction with John Muir's book. ( Reviewed in the United States on May 20, 2013 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Charles B. -- Dating Muir : Well written book about the travels of John Muir through the coast of Alaska. Brings to life his love of the glaciers and the country around them. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2018 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Sylvie -- Interesting book for all John Muir admirers : It is an interesting read wether you know the coastal region of Alaska or not. Young's descriptions of life and the landscapes back then are sometimes funny and sometimes very beautiful. What I liked most about this book was the chance to "see" John Muir through one of his closest friends eyes, it made my smile a lot. I would recommend this book to all John Muir admirers!
